Check out the following, I got a chuckle outta this:
OK, I suppose the title of this blog post is sorta inaccurate, because not all of the "nutty" news stories included are about D&D and Satan. But a good number of them do involve that taint of "D&D is bad" mentality that was rife in the 80's. However, there doesn't seem to be a mention of Jack Chick anywhere, so that at least is refreshing.
I think my favorite is the story where the guys gave up tossing around 45 RPM records in favor of playing D&D. Good move, fellas.
P.S. Did anyone out there reading this have a Judah the Christian Soldier action figure?
The Christian adults did not question us playing GURPS Conan or RIFTS, since "Dungeons & Dragons" was not written on the cover.
ReplyDeleteIt's worth mentioning that on both covers, GURPS Conan and RIFTS (original cover), there are half-naked women prominently displayed.
I know, right?! The hypocrisy of it all...
DeleteHillary Clinton also denounced it in her 80s book (funny how that doesn't get mentioned much anymore...)
ReplyDeleteHmmm, Hilary had a book in the 80's? Anyway, Tipper Gore definitely had a book about heavy metal and Satanism, that was a big thing as well.
DeleteEveryone I played D&D with in the 80's was Christian. Most of the nutty comments are from authorities like Sheriffs, Detectives the media etc. The media picked a few lunatics and pretended they represent Christian views in general. A tactic still used now (cf. Westboro Baptist Church). Growing up in a very Christian environment and community, I still never saw any of this behavior or blaming first hand.
ReplyDeleteYou had a better experience than me, then. I was raised Baptist and my church continuously denounced D&D. They even brought in a special speaker to talk to us about the evils of heavy metal (as he pointed out occult symbols on album covers and played Led Zeppelin backwards) as well as D&D.
DeleteI'm a little disappointed jack chick publications didn't appear on the list!
